Join artist Robert Burley and environmental planner Jane Weninger for a photographic presentation and discussion based on the book, An Enduring Wilderness: Toronto’s Natural Parklands.
Published in 2017 by ECW Press, An Enduring Wilderness and its companion photography exhibition were commissioned by the City of Toronto. The project is related to many City initiatives such as the Ravine Strategy, the designation of 86 new biodiversity areas called Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs), and the establishment of the Rouge as Canada's first and only urban national park.
Robert Burley is an artist working in photography whose work often explores the transition between city and country. Over a forty-year career, he has undertaken numerous urban landscape projects including explorations of Toronto’s Don Valley, Chicago’s O’Hare Airfield and New York City’s Central Park. Robert Burley’s works have been exhibited around the globe. His most recent book, Accidental Wilderness: The Origins and Ecology of Tommy Thompson Park, written by landscape architect Walter H. Kehm, was published by University of Toronto Press in 2020. Robert currently lives in Toronto and teaches at The School of Image Arts, Ryerson University.
Jane Weninger is a senior planner with the City of Toronto responsible for natural heritage and green space planning. She was responsible for identification and official plan designation of environmentally significant areas (ESAs), Greenbelt conformity and representing the City of Toronto in the establishment of the Rouge National Urban Park. A contributor to An Enduring Wilderness, Jane believes that nature and the city need to co-exist and that natural landscapes are fundamental to the quality of urban life.
